Upcoming Break

September is vacation time for Lantana Games as we put Children of Liberty on the backburner to get all of our business affairs in order, which is, admittedly, one of the most exciting developments to happen in the last year. Once we are back to work at the beginning of October, we will begin reexamining CoL from both a technological and gameplay standpoint, making sure the gameplay hasn’t gone too vanilla (or even bad) and actually determining our target platform. Contrary to popular belief, we actually do not know where Children of Liberty is headed upon release, with the exception of every child’s heart.

In case you missed it, we demoed the game at Boston GameLoop earlier in the week. We didn’t have much time to show it, but the comments we received were very positive and it looks as though we are mainly heading in the right direction with development. We won’t really know where we are taking the game until we return to development in October when the team is back from their respective vacations visiting their loved ones.

Hopefully we can post up some concept art or other goodies during September though, and don’t forget to help get the Lantana Games Facebook Page to 300 fans so you can watch the very first trailer.

An Open Letter to the Town of Maynard

Dear Town of Maynard,
Very sorry to hear about your loss of Curt Schilling’s 38 Studios. During these tough, economic times, one must grab every opportunity they can, and via that logic I can understand their decision to take Pawtucket, RI up on their $75 mil offer. An offer like that is tough to match, and when that happens and you’re out 150-200 jobs, it can be a serious blow to your own town’s economy.

I, however, am not pleading Curt Schilling to stay in Massachusetts. His company has made up its mind to move away from the greatest game development community in America. However, if I may be blunt, they were a new studio four years ago and have only within the last couple of weeks announced their first project, Big Huge Games’ Kingdom of Amalur: Reckoning, which isn’t even the big in-house MMO Copernicus that will dethrone World of Warcraft that everyone was looking forward to. Yes, town of Maynard, you are out several hundred jobs, but I have a solution.

Lantana Games was founded nearly one year ago and in that time we have posted three games online. We currently create 2D games focused on single player and local multiplayer instead of massively multiplayer online games, which allows our budgets to be small and our production time to be quick. Our current project, Children of Liberty, focuses on the beginnings of the American Revolution in Boston, so you know we won’t be going anywhere. We are a team of four and we are looking for somewhere to centralize our efforts.

Town of Maynard, why bother competing for 38 Studios when you can have Lantana Games for a whole lot cheaper? They’re asking for $75,000,000. We are asking for a measly $300,000 and some office space you can donate to us. That’s 0.4% of their asking price. You would have $74,700,000 leftover! Think of what you could do with the extra cash! Fix up your roads (no, wait, this is Massachusetts, we don’t do that)! Invite more businesses into the area to get your economy rolling again! Cut whatever taxes you can! Hell, howabout you just SIT on it and spend it only when you really NEED to?

You like having game developers in your area, so think about what Lantana Games has to offer you. We are a small team with fast turnaround that delivers. Give it some thought, mull it over, and let us know.
